Emil's Memories is a Side Quest in NieR: Automata

"You happened upon Emil admiring the lunar tears around the commercial facility. He said they brought back memories, and also filled him with an emotion that he couldn't quite describe. He then asked you to find more lunar tears somewhere in each region, hoping that they might help him understand his feelings."

"At last, Emil remembers everything - including a place that was very important to him. In gratitude, he offered to show you his special place and gave you a key to the elevator in the commercial facility. He will be waiting for you in the basement."

"After you found a wide space covered with lunar tears in the basement of the commercial facility, Emil appeared and told you of his life. He was built long ago as a weapon, and he himself was but one of many copies produced during the war against the aliens. He said that the place you were standing was very dear to the original Emil who had lived so long before. Your Emil then wistfully explained how echoes of that memory lingered on inside him."

Emil's Memories Objectives

  1. Locate all lunar tears
  2. Go to the Commercial Facility in City Ruins
  3. Use the key for the lift, call the lift and get on

Emil's Memories Walkthrough

  • This quest unlocks after you have met Emil and completed the quest The Forest Kingdom.
  • Travel to the desert entrance in the City Ruins after asking Pascal about A2. Shoot Emil, talk to him, and the flower will be present in the next step.
  • Travel to the City Ruins: Near the Tower access point and towards the Commercial Facility on the way to Forest Zone. You will see a shining flower on the ground floor of the facility. Interact with it and Emil will appear and begin the quest.

Lunar Tear Locations:

  1. Flooded City: At the very end of the platform where you board the flight units. (Near the dead end)
  2. Amusement Park: In the corner near the Item Shop of the area.
  3. Desert Zone: Travel to Desert: Camp and go into the desert. Keep to your right as you enter until the path opens to go down into some caves. Walk down until you reach the heart of the caves, and when the camera angle changes and moves on the top of you, keep the bottom-left direction and follow the caves in a large U-Turn, until you come out in a new area. Take some steps ahead and then turn back and climb the rocks on your right. Keep going, drop down an edge on soft sand and keep walking until you come to another edge. Across the gap, there's a shining item. Use Jump > Evade > jump to reach the item, then do it again towards the area marked on the map. You will finally drop down to the area with a Locked Chest and the Moon Tear.
  4. Forest Zone: Travel to the Center access point. Go down until you find the river and follow it down and turn a right to go into a cave before the big waterfall.
  5. Head back to the Commercial Building in between City Ruins and Forest Zone. Use the key for the lift, call the lift and get on
  6. Down the lift, Emil will share his story and give you your reward.
  7. Nearby, you can pick up Gold Ore, Animal Bait and G, as well as a Locked Chest with Archives: Project Gestalt Report 10.

Notes

  • As 2B quest must be done before fight with Grün.
  • Can't be done with A2 or in Route C. Try initiating the quest during the first sub-chapter of chapter 7.

The desert lunar can be accessed directly without going through the cave.
As 9S, just get on top of the higher accessible rock closer to the rock wall (it's the second one on the right). Position yourself facing the wall and do an upward swing quickly followed by an air dash:
jump + quickly press short attack > then air dash (R2)
If the timing is correct, you gonna go directly up the wall and straight to the item (plus there's a locked chest there, so 9S is recommended).

You can do it too as 2B....the command is:
jump + quickly press heavy attack > then air dash (R2)
(But you gonna have to come back as 9S to open the chest anyway.)

As of August 2022, you can just run past the missile quest to look at the flower. As long as you don't trigger the flight units, you're ok to leave and complete emil's quest.

If you have the key but the elevator is bugged (arrow pointing above it, but you cannot interact with it to open it) do the following:
DISCLAMER: I did it as 2b, but you should be able to do it as 9s also (there's 1 chest that needs hacking when you finish the quest)
          - restart at chapter 07-01 and talk to Pascal
          - go talk to emil (he will be selling items like he would normally) but now you will be able to redo the quest after going into buy/sell menu with him
          - go to the flower in the shopping mall to restart the quest
          - redo the quest (find all the flowers again)
          - after the quest is complete you will get the key again. Go open the elevator in the shopping centre - it should remain open from then on. Use the elevator.
          - you can now finish "Gathering keepsakes" quest by accessing the elevator too (redo the quest, I did it at ch. 15-01)

In case no one has mentioned this, I was actually able to complete this quest in Route B despite activating Missile Supply Mission, aka the point of no return, for side quests. What I did: Used 9S’s long flight to jump across the submerged building to the end of the bridge right where the flower is (sprint off the building, double jump, activate pod fall and immediately hit light attack + jump to do the spin kick, evade forward, pod glide again, doesn’t need evade extender or move speed up). The machines ended up aggroing the first try. I missed the second try, respawned in the middle of the bridge, rushed forward to the flower and activated it. The machines didn’t attack during Emil’s monologue, he gave me the item, and I went straight back to the teleporter and completed the quest. Neither character ever struck the machines during all this. Initially I destroyed the machines and spawned the flight units, but reloaded the save just in case the game ended for abandoning the mission or whatever, so I don’t recommend doing that. Hope this helps.

After gathering all of the lunar tears, receiving the key and then advancing the main story too far before taking the elevator, it seems I'm forever locked out of finishing this quest :D Been through all routes and gone back to the chapter, still nothing, sad times

To get the Desert Lunar tear, this description is ambiguous since the next path is also a cave. To get to the correct location, stay to the right, you will find a cliff, you need to go down the cliff. Then follow the rest of the instructions

Just a quick note: You need to start and finish Emil's Lunar Tear and activate the elevator in the Commercial Area BEFORE interacting with Grün with either 2B or 9S. You can only finish this quest (the flowers part) with 9S after route B's ending. (It's logical as, otherwise, why would 9S put flowers down before the event at the end of B route?) Basically, the window to be able to open the Commercial Area's elevator is super small and you MUST stop Emil and get the quest from him before the Missile quest even START as, once the Missile Quest start, one of the Lunar Tears can't be accessed without starting the fight with Grün. In any route, after Grün, the elevator is blocked even if you got the key. (The activation icon is there if you got the key, but it can't be activated due to a unfixed bug.) If the elevator has been activated once prior to Grün, the elevator remains active after him. The end of this quest can only be activated by 9S. If you have missed the small window to activate the elevator, you'll have to wait until Chapter Selection is available.

The quest is bugged but can be fixed. Simply start from the beginning of the chapter where you talk to pascal. It will trigger the lunar tear to be interactable. If starting on 7-2 it seems the event doesn't trigger properly.

I'm now on route C, been trying to trigger this quest since route A without success.
I've been talking to Emil since route A and I've received and read the Way Bored email, but doesn't make a difference. Whenever I talk to Emil he's only trying to sell me stuff.
One anon said something about receiving a call from 6O about a Lunar Tear, I don't remember ever receiving this call.
I think this quest glitched out on my playthrough for some reason.

For the record: Do both Emil's Memories and The Wandering Couple BEFORE talking to Anemonie to trigger the main story line quest to go to Flooded City. Triggering the main quest will make both of the former quest unable to be finished.

If you missed this quest during Route A and B you can trigger it again by going to 6-05 and from there you have to
                          1. Do the main quest till you're done talking to Pascal
                          2. Transport to Desert Camp and stop Emil and talk to him around this time you should also get a call from 6O regarding the Lunar Tear (Havent really tested if you need to stop and talk to Emil but better safe than sorry)
                          3. Go to the shopping mall near the tower and interact with the lunar tear.

You can also see kaine's painting of her grandma in the house, its about as crude and ugly as it was described in nier 1. I had massive chills running down my spine when i realized what it was.

Can I still do this quest now that I'm on Route C? It doesn't seem like there's a way to trigger it anymore...

Don't know if this is common, but the quest seemed to glitch for me. I got the elevator key on the first playthrough but didn't finish the quest. Now the quest tells me I already have the elevator key when I should be getting it and I can't use the elevator. The quest disappears from my quest log and I can inspect the first lunar tear again to restart the quest, but can't inspect any of the other lunar tears. Currently stuck. Going to next new game plus soon to see if it'll reset it properly.
