How To Open Locked Chests in Nier: Automata
As you play through the game you will notice some chests locked. If you try to interact with them, you will get a message that you can't access them at the moment. These chests can only be unlocked in the second playthrough of the game as you are making your way towards Ending B.
When you start your second playthrough you will gain the ability to hack chests by holding the triangle button. It will initiate a bullet hell game to destroy the orb, similar to in the boss fights. Destroy the orb to unlock them and loot the gear inside! The Locked Chests page has information on all the chests and their contents.
Locked Chests are special chests in Nier: Automata that are locked out from access until the first playthrough is complete, and the player begins Route B playthrough as 9S. These chests must be hacked to be opened. This page shows all chest locations as well as their contents. There's a Plug-in Chip available on your second playthrough that shows all items and chests on the map: very helpful!

Contains: Archives: Ragged DVD Located: From the Desert: Camp access point, make your way to the building with the U-shaped stacked boxes, where also Sorting Trouble 3 happens. You need to jump across the large road onto the building on the other side. To reach it, sprint and double jump off the ledge. At the peak of the second jump press X + R1 to let the pod catapult you forwards and hold X to let it carry you. While holding X, press Square to make a spinning move with the pod that lifts you upwards, which should be more than enough to reach it. If not, you can also dash at the end. |

Continue up the stairs to the left to open an unlocked chest with two gold ores, jump from halfway up the stairs towards the right to land on a hidden platform with locked chest.

Jump onto the second crusher to reach the first one (just the crushing part, not the whole machine), then jump back to the left to reach a platform.
