NieR Automata New Player Help Guide

Get Chippy by Installing Chips

Let's start by reminding you that you can alter your perks and abilities by installing Plug-in Chips for your favorite YoRHa android. As you progress throughout the game, you will find Plug-in Chips that will allow you to tinker with 2B's Perks and Abilities. Perks provide the playable character with extra bonuses such as more damage, item drops, increased defense, better evasion, unique abilities, and many more. As exciting as it may sound, you'll need to be smart with choosing which Plug-in Chip to use since you can only allocate a certain number of chips depending on the total number of memory you can use.

As far as Memory goes in NieR Automata, Shop Keepers or Merchants sell Memory, and purchasing these is a must to further expand the amount of Memory. More Memory means more Plug-in Chips! At some point in the game, you will acquire duplicates of a Plug-in Chip, and fusing two chips of the same kind at a shop further boosts the stats and/or bonuses, as well as decreases the amount of memory required for that chip. With a variety of Plug-in Chips, you can have a total of three sets that can be switched between while you roam around. Apart from that, players can also auto-equip a full set of chips that are tailored to a specific style of gameplay. Use this to your advantage so that you can quickly adapt to the situation you are in, especially during boss encounters.

What's Dead Isn't Lost

NieR: Automata can be challenging at times and eventually, you'll die and lose some of your items. Luckily, you can retrieve what you've lost as long as you return to the spot where you died and simply interact with your body to retrieve the item/s. You can do this while you are free roaming or during boss fights that trigger within the main story.

A prompt to recover your body when you walk over it will appear to recover the item/s — just be careful and make sure you don't die along the way as you try to return to the scene of your death, dying right before you retrieve your body will make the items disappear for good.

The game doesn’t end, it expands

My first playthrough would have been SO much shorter if I had known that, after a certain point, access points will allow me to travel everywhere I had discovered. Also, if you commit enough time, you will eventually unlock “Chapter Select” and can play any Main Story Quest and associated Side Quests you have missed. So, when you accidentally fail a quest because you progress the story – don’t fret!

Increase your POD affinity & other Secrets

The game does not tell you this, but you can rub your Dualshock 4’s touchpad to increase pod affinity. There are also a slew of other Secrets, such as locked chests and doors, that you can discover throughout your playthroughs. There are also combat details that are left out of common explanation, such as pressing and holding square for a heavier attack, or charging your Pod attacks by holding down L1. Check out the Secrets  and Combat pages on the wiki for details

Put your G to good use

Don’t bother buying materials or chips at the start, save your cash and buy Upgrade Storage from the Maintenance Shop. The more space you have on your chip configuration, the best loadouts you can make. You can also swap them on-the-fly mid combat, and create different ones for different objectives such as material farming, speedrunning, or leveling up fast.

Fusing Chips is an Art

You have the option of fusing chips at the maintenance shop. Your ideal chip will be +6 with the least amount of slots used. To achieve this, sell any chips that don’t have a little diamond shape next to them that you aren’t using, and focus on fusing only diamond + diamond. This will give you lots of G and avoid you making any mistakes when fusing.

Inventory Management is a thing

You will soon fill out on Copper Ore, so make sure to sell it when you near 80, but inventory can also fill on plug-in chips and the like. Make sure you profit off your findings as much as you can. You can also sell all the fish and “valuables” you find such as broken earrings, but keep a Mackerel and any Desert Roses you find to use on quests.

No Auto-Save in NieR: Automata - Beware!

Let it be known that in NieR: Automata, there is no Auto-Save feature! So always do a quick save and play the game with caution. The game does advise us about this with a small message when starting the game but it doesn't remind us about it later on. Always make a habit of manually saving the game via the menu when you are within safe areas or via the Access Points with Quick Save.

You can save your progress via Access Points, terminals in the Bunker, and manually saving via the pause menu — TIP: try to avoid dying during the Prologue section of the game since it doesn't have any save points that you can use to save your game, if you die, you'll get bumped back to the main menu and lose your progress.

Revive Fallen YoRHa Units: Online Co-op

Yes, NieR: Automata features a co-op mode (sort of) and unfortunately, the game doesn't fully explain this feature or even how it works. When the world finally opens up, where you can freely roam, you'll see a prompt to toggle Online Mode On or Off, we highly recommend that you turn it on and leave it on whenever you play so that you can trigger co-op play from other players who are currently online. As you roam around open areas, you will find bodies of YoRHa units, these are players who are online and recently died in their game.

revive yorha nier automata wiki guide 300px min

As you approach a body, you have two options on what to do with it, you can Retrieve or Repair the player's body. Retrieving a body will instantly heal you and provide you with a buff based on what the dead body (player) has, and sometimes, you'll also acquire some G (Money) or items. If you choose to Repair a player's dead body, this will revive its body and an A.I. will help you in combat. After some time it will leave or die if its health is fully depleted during combat.

Save. Save. SAVE!

Access Points are very important to your progress through the game, so save often. There are some crashes and bugs such as NPCs not showing up, and you don’t want to be a victim of the game’s lack of auto-save.

Double Jump, Dash Jump & Glide

You can perform longer jumps by using an evade after your first jump and then jumping again. This allows you to reach seemingly inaccessible locations. There are also a set of attacks you can do to cover even larger distances. For those impossible-to-reach chests: Hold X (jump) before you get off the platform, press R2 to dash off, then square (You will do a round kick with your pod). Now let go of X and press X+Square for an upwards attack, keep X pressed and press square again for roundkick, then if you still aren’t there press X + r1 and your pod will launch you. You can also press and hold your jump button (default X) to glide using your pod and avoid all fall damage.

Customize your Plug-in Chips & Pod Programs

You will find many plug-in chips and have to chose from them. Match the effect to your selected Weapon type, and make sure you add “extras” such as Auto-use Item and Anti Chain Damage. For some specific side quests, you may want to use Movement Speed Up and the program A110: Slow.

Difficulty settings have no effect on story or trophies

The game is best enjoyed in the Normal setting, but if you’re having trouble or want the combat to go faster on subsequent playthroughs while trophy hunting, you can turn things down to easy. You then have the option to equip the auto-chips, although I don’t recommend it. Simply reducing enemy health and damage should be enough to make things go faster without turning the game into an interactive directional presser.

Explore! Your minimap is your friend

Find and equip HUD: Items chips as soon as you can. You will begin seeing all nearby items and chests on your mini-map, allowing you to see things you may otherwise miss. There are obscure pathways and jumps that take you to new loot and important secret NPCs. In addition to its fantastic combat and action, Nier: Automata is a quirky and delightful game that will work its way into your gaming heart. It features a lot of hidden elements and oddities that are reminiscent of the old school games that were infused with personality. Multiple endings and surprising mechanics will keep you coming back for a long time. When you’ve got your feet wet, be sure to visit the wiki and check out some more of these deeper gameplay features like weaponsitemsplug-in chips and full walkthroughs of quests. Happy playing!

Best help for new people who just want the story, and don't care too much for combat. Switch the game to easy mode, use the Auto-Chips. Not just use them, but use them in a certain spot. The Desert Housing Complex after you beat a certain boss will continuously spawn infinte enemies. Use AutoChips here. Then go do something else. I went to a four hour extra shift at lvl 27, and came home to level 75 almost lvl 76.

Adding to #2: If you die, DON'T SAVE until you retrieve your chips from your corpse. If you end up losing your chips, just load your game from the pause menu and it'll revert you back to your last save with all your stuff. (of course, you will lose any items/exp you gained in between saving and dying, but that's a way better deal than losing an entire chip set).

Also of interest: weapon loadout is more than just Light Weapon for light attack, Heavy weapon for heavy attack. Your combos change completely depending on how you equip- it completely alters your animations, attack range, length of combo, etc (try a heavy weapon in the first slot and a spear in the second, its amazing).
