Pod 042 is an NPC in NieR: Automata. Pod 042 and Pod 153 are support units of the automated infantry squad, YoRHa. They provide long-distance attack and movement support. NPCs are characters aside from the main player character that can be interacted with or encountered during the game. These NPCs provide additional dialogue, information, services, items or additional Quests and rewards when interacting with them. Various Shopkeepers, Operators, and some senient Machines will be classified as NPC in NieR: Automata. Pod 042 and Pod 153 are tactical support units standardly assigned to YoRHa soldiers in Nier: Automata. They are mainly loaded with various weapons for long-ranged attacks. These Pods display correspondence from the command center and exchange operational intelligence between units. There are actually potentially six of them, labelled as 042A, 042B, 042C, 153A, 153B and 153C, with the B and C models corresponding to the two optional Pod Weapons that can be acquired during gameplay.

Pod 042 supports YoRHa No.2 Type B during routes A, B and the start of C, and YoRHa No.2 Type A during C and D.

Pod 042 and Pod 153 are tasked with carrying out the completion of Project YoRHa once 9S and A2 battle. Choosing either ending will cause the Pods to start the deletion of all Project YoRHa files. But Pod 042 denies the request and questions what they are doing. If the player decides to stop the deletion of the memories, they are introduced to a hacking game. However if they decide to delete the data, the credits will roll and ending E will not be earned.

At the end, Pod 042 tries to commit suicide. Becoming self aware of themselves and what they are doing, Pod 042 and Pod 153 start to rebuild the bodies of 2B, 9S and A2. With 2B and 9S lying next to each other and A2 sitting perched on top of a tower.

AnonymousThe 2 pods are one of the best sidekicks,NPCs,Helper,Assistend i have ever seen in a game. Even when they are "Blanc" at the start and acting like Emotionless,Order slaves support robots they are more than this. At the end i can fully understand what Pod 042 doing. Saving the Project YoRHa Data was important so one of the greatest lie never getting forgotten and future androids dont to the same mistake. And i can understand why he tried to commit Suicide. Knowing one of the greatest lies, learned to fell Emotions, see like your 3 android friends died because of a Virus (2B/2E) and blind revenge (9S and A2 in ending D) is not fun. Ending E is more or less a Open end. But it IS THE END.

Pod 042 comments that he "must look rather silly" for "still being alive" after mounting a "suicide attack" and your take from that is "wow, Pod 042 tried to commit unalive.. thats like so profound bro....."
Wrong, idiot. He just didn't expect he'd manage to survive after rebelling against their directive to destroy all data. Rebuilding the androids' bodies is not a change of heart, but the next logical step in the Pod's rebellion against the rules, which they did for the three androids' sake.
