Crafting in NieR: Automata is how you upgrade your Weapons and Pods. You will find various crafting materials throughout your playthrough, there are certain crafting materials that are scarce and can be hard to find if you miss out on certain steps to acquire them. You will acquire materials as you progress through the game that can be combined in order to improve your Weapons. Materials also drop from Enemies as you defeat them. Materials can also be found in various Locations scattered throughout the world.

Every Weapon can be upgraded up to level 4. The weapons vendors in the Resistance Camp and Pascal's Village can upgrade them to 3. Once achieved, the vendors will refer you to Master Swordsmith Masamune who can bring your weapon to level 4. You'll find him in the Forest Zone. When you reach the side-scrolling portion of the castle keep going until you come to the second snake. Past it is a jump, aim for the lower platform. In the leftmost corner you will hear banging. Move the large crate and head into the room to find him. He will upgrade your weapons to 4 in exchange for money and materials. Eventually he will present you with a special weapon if you upgrade enough weapons. Weapon Upgrades in NieR Automata

Weapons can be upraded to Level 3 at the Weapons Trader in Pascal's Village or at the Resistance Camp. After upgrading all your weapons, these NPCs will tell you about Masamune, a skilled swordsmith who can upgrade your weapons even further. Masamune can upgrade your weapon to level 4 and sells a variety of weapons, and once you upgraded any weapon to level 4, he will gift you the Weapon of Cruel Lament. Masamune can be found in the Forest Zone, inside the castle. As you progress through the side-scrolling sections of the area, you will eventually encounter Linked-Sphere Type enemies and once you encounter the second one, make your way up the library, work your way and jump across the next building, you want to aim for the bottom ledge to find Masamune. There is a crate blocking the path that must be pulled back first. You can then run inside and see the Master Swordsmith himself.

Pod Upgrades in NieR Automata

Pods can be upgraded at the Resistance Camp or at the Maintenance Shop Owner NPC in The Bunker. There are 3 different pods that can be found in the game:

Each Pod can be upgraded a total of 3 times. The first improves the basic attack, the second adds a new ability to charge when firing, and the third improves the charged attack. At level 1, the Pod has an attack value of 150, and at max level it has an attack level of 180.

At the start of routes C/D, City Ruins: Near Factory, on top of the Goliath's severed 'shovel arm'. Glide across from the Goliath's head. Forest Zone: Royal Chamber. Treasure point in the cradle where the baby king was before. Can be found in a little chest near a locked one in the City Ruins: Cave. Can be found by scanning the river by the rope bridge near the "city ruins: near the tower" access point.
Powerup Part S	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 1) Pod B (Required: 1) Pod C (Required: 1)	Reward for completing Anemone's Past. Reward for completing Robo Dojo--Red Belt. Dropped by the Courageous Brother after defeating it and the two Gold Goliath Bipeds in the City Ruins.
Powerup Part M	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 1) Pod B (Required: 1) Pod C (Required: 1)	Flooded City - Locked Chest: Located before the fourth lift inside the Soul Box recovery unit during the quest Obtain Keys (third playthrough). Forest Zone - Locked Chest: Located in a deeper section of the Forest Zone. From Forest: Center access point, follow the river down until a big drop. Find a ledge to the right you can drop down onto, and continue going down the uneven slopes until you find the locked chest. Must be 9S. Copied City - Locked Chest: From the Adam Boss fight, head straight down the path to a set of chests. Must be 9S.
Powerup Part L	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 1) Pod B (Required: 1) Pod C (Required: 1)	The Amusement Park Rabbit at the main entrance of the Amusement Park will provide the part after the first victory. The Tower, after the first Ko-Shi boss encounter as A2 (Ch. 17-06). Complete Emil's Determination quest, then return to Emil's house to find the part in a chest. (If you use Chapter Select after the fight, you have to talk to Emil again to be able to access his home).
Tree Seed	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 10) Pod B (Required: 10)	Can be found in various locations around the world, typically at the base of trees and foliage. Mushroom	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 10) Pod C (Required: 10)	Loot by the waterfall in the Forest Zone where you trigger Photographs. Reward for completing Devola's Request. Loot on the path from the Forest Castle's courtyard to Pascal's Village. Can be found at harvest points in Forest Zone.
Eagle Eggs	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 5) Pod C (Required: 5)	Can be found at harvest points in Forest Zone.
Giant Egg	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 3) Pod C (Required: 3)	Reward for completing Treasure Hunt at the Castle. Found at harvest points in the Forest Zone.
Torn Book	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod B (Required: 10) Pod C (Required: 10)	Can be looted from harvest points in the Desert Zone. Reward for completing Camp Development. Sold by the shopkeeper in the Amusement Park for 135G.
Tech Manual	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod B (Required: 5) Pod C (Required: 5)	Can be looted as a randon drop in the Desert Zone. Reward for completing Data Analysis Freak. Sold by the shopkeeper in the Amusement Park (after completing Route C).
Thick Dictionary	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod B (Required: 3) Pod C (Required: 3)	Dropped by Small Biped Reward for completing Heritage of the Past Can be found at harvest points in the Desert Zone. Sold by the Shopkeeper in the at the Amusement Park. The price it's sold changes per playthrough. (5,000G for Route A. 7,500 for Route B. 13,500 for Route C).
Pure Water	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 10) Pod C (Required: 10)	Rewarded for completing Devola's Request. Can sometimes be collected in the Flooded City.
Tanning Agent	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 5) Pod C (Required: 5)	Reward for completing Amnesia. Sold by the shopkeeper at the Amusement Park for 675G. Can be found at harvest points in the Flooded City.
Dye	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 3) Pod C (Required: 3)	Reward for completing The Twins' Request. Reward for completing Storage Element. Can be found at harvest points in the Flooded City. Sold by the shopkeeper at the Amusement Park for 675G.
Natural Rubber	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 10) Pod B (Required: 10)	Can be looted in the Desert Zone. Reward for completing Camp Development. Sold by Amusement park vendor once zombified.
Machine Oil	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 3) Pod B (Required: 3)	First chest on the first level after the first "boss" encounter. Reward for completing Sorting Trouble 3. Sold by the shopkeeper in the Park Ruins (after completing Route C).
Filler Metal	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod A (Required: 5) Pod B (Required: 5)	Sold by the shopkeeper in the Park Ruins: Attraction Sq. (after completing Route C). Random harvestable item in the lower sections of the Abandoned Factory (inside the Factory:hangar saving point room there are 3 harvest spots). If the Goliath has already spawned in the Factory:Hanger access point area, you can follow this farming loop in Route C instead. Tip: equipping Auto-Collect Item chip is very useful for farming, speeding things up: Go to the Factory: Hangar access point, save, and don't take the elevator. Follow the path through the Factory "forward" fighting everything you encounter, and also blowing up the piles of dead purple machines, which sometimes drop materials. Keep going, fighting and collecting drops, until you get a fight in a silo (round area) with 2 or 3 Enhanced machines (type depends on your level - at 60+ you might encounter 3 Multi-leg Mediums, or 2 Multi-leg Mediums and an Enhanced Goliath).
Elaborate Gadget	Can be used to upgrade the following: Pod B (Required: 5) Pod C (Required: 5)	Reward for completing Reconnaissance Squad. Reward for completing Sorting Trouble 2. Royal Chamber. Sporadically appear in the king's cradle. City Ruins: Near Factory. 4th floor of the building that you first come out on after the prologue. Desert: Center. Found with Scanner near the 4th spawn (the one with flyers) from The Machine Surge quest from your first visit to the desert. Stay on the inside of the pipe ring. Don't need to be on the quest to get it, that's just the area it's in. City Ruins: near the radio tower, climbing on the tower and then jumping down on the stone arch nearby. Factory: found using Scanner In the small hallway filled with dead bodies between the so-shi boss area and the elevator that leads there. Desert: Found sporadically near the waterside in the desert oasis. 2 rewarded for completing hacking challenge mode.
